Day 4: Oil Pulling

I'm currently swishing 2 teaspoons of coconut oil in my mouth. It's hard to believe its only been 8 minutes. I'm feverishly trying to find things to occupy my mind in hopes of reaching my 15 minutes goal. Look! Only 6 more minutes.  Although I don't mind the act of oil pulling the amount of time it needs to be done for is exhausting and I've never even done it for the full 20 minutes!

I have 4 little ones, a 20 minute morning routine doesn't exist in my world. Most days Im lucky to be dressed, teeth brushed and hair brushed before my husband walks in the door at 4 pm! But, I  really believe both my son and I could benefit from this practice so Im making an extra effort to find the time. Only 1 more minute! Hey. I might go for the full 20 minutes. This is much easier done while distracted.

Today I am going to call the dentist to set up an appointment bc I haven't had a chance yet. Here's to hoping he doesn't think I'm a nut for wanting my 7 year old to oil pull!

Day 3: Oil Pulling - Seeing Results!

I'm on day 3 of this oil pulling journey and I have to say I'm really liking it! Today I did 2 teaspoons for 10 minutes. I think this is the perfect amount for me so from now on I will just be increasing my time. I guess I'm lucky because so far I haven't experienced any of the "Rookie Headaches" I heard so much about and was dreading. I'm thinking these headaches people have experienced are do to either lock jaw from swishing too much for too long or they weren't properly breathing through their noses therefor not getting enough oxygen. I'm not a doctor but these two things would be my guess.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am a very critical person. I don't normally jump on band wagons and would rather prove something wrong then right, it's just how I'm wired. But, I've got to be honest and say that today while brushing my teeth I noticed no blood! My gums always bleed when I brush and floss and today nothing! I haven't changed my routine except for the pulling so I have to believe that it is what is causing the difference.

Tomorrow I will be increasing my time to 15 minutes, wish me luck!

Day 2: Oil Pulling Expirement

I'm happy to report that after yesterday's oil pulling I did not experience any headaches!

This morning I increased the amount of coconut oil to 1 tablespoon and time to 8 minutes. First, let me say that I feel that 1 tablespoon is way too much. I had aimed for 10 minutes but at the 8 minute mark the oil had at least doubled in size and I could no longer swish and it was starting to seep out my mouth so I just spit. I use my coconut oil from a liquid state so this may be the reason why its getting so big so quickly. Tomorrow I'm going to be trying 2 teaspoons for 10 minutes. And its a little after 10 pm now and still no headache.

I am calling tomorrow to set up a dentist appointment for Jahvar so I can discuss the possibility of him oil pulling. Not sure of what the reaction is going to be but I'll keep you all posted.

Day 1: Oil Pulling Expirement

Yes, Im jumping onto the Internet frenzy bandwagon. Not because Im all into the ultra healthy living epidemic that has swept the nation but because of my son. He's 7, and has a genetic disorder that I just realized my dentist didn't even tell me the name of! But anyway, this disorder creates saliva that doesn't contain the enzymes to break down they food or plaque debris in his mouth. So it forms a rock hard barrier along the backside of his front teeth that has to be removed by the dentist periodically. The dentist has assured me that Ineed not worry because children don't get cavities in their front teeth but my common sense won't allow me to believe that.

So, when I first read about this oil pulling stuff my first thought was,"this is the solution to Jahvar's disorder!" I know, the  painstaking task of trying to get an 8 year old boy to do anything for 20 minutes is going to be unbearable but I'm willing to do it for my son.

I dug deeper into my tease arch and was  disappointed that I couldn't find anything about kids oil pulling. I mean, I wasn't surprised I didn't find anything but I was disappointed. The more I read the more concerned I became about the newbie headaches. I don't want him to be in pain all day because I made him do something I'm sure he isn't going to want to do!

That's when I decided to do an oil pulling experiment which would gradually increase the amount of oil and the time spent swishing to see of I could eliminate or at least decrease this newbie headache side effect.

Today is Day 1 of this experiment! This morning With a lot of apprehension I started my oil pulling regiment. I'm starting out small because face it NO ONE wants to have a raging headache in a house of 6 kids on a summer's day! I started with 1 teaspoon and swished for 5 minutes. This is what I've learned about oil pulling today: coconut oil tastes really good and doesn't have the nasty oil feel I was expecting to make me gag, 1 tsp. may be enough for Jahvar but it definitely isn't enough for me, 5 minutes also isn't long enough to do much other then make my mouth feel fresh, and not spitting in the sink is going to be harder to remember then I thought!

This is the Coconut Oil I will be using from Costco

Tomorrow I plan on increasing my coconut oil to 2 tsp. and swishing for 10 minutes! As of right now, I have no headache, Ill let you know tomorrow if it stays that way!
